My grandmother often spoke about feeling invisible as she aged, despite a lifetime of experience and achievements. Like her, many women have made invaluable contributions, yet their voices are too often ignored, fading into the background. Her words sparked a desire in me to look into the experiences of older women who may be moving through similar emotional landscapes. At the beginning of Cease To Remember, I conducted over 15 interviews with women living self-sufficiently, ages 63 to 103. Through these conversations, I was able to glimpse their lives with honesty and tenderness, and to photograph intimate, unguarded moments. These women, who paved the way for young artists like me, should not feel forgotten. Absorbing their stories and insights, it became clear that their narratives are far from concluded. We have so much to learn from our elders, and we must preserve their stories.
